Photography is a beautiful, but sometimes hard to master, art. It's not a simple as point and shoot. There's a lot of different things that need to be taken into consideration. Lighting, tripods, framing, and lenses all play a part in getting the perfect shot. There are lenses that create a wide range of effects and change the image in different ways. The easiest lenses to get into and start learning about are zoom lenses. There are a few different types of zoom lenses for new Nikon cameras that will help your photos to a great extent.
First, there is two different measurements of zoom; optical and digital. Optical zoom measures the increase of the focal length of the lens. You can see this first hand as your lens extends from the body of the camera. If using a Nikon compact digital camera, some models will let you stop at any point in the zoom process for a partial zoom. This means the camera has a "smooth zoom". Some other models stop at specific points, limiting your zoom to a few different positions.
Interchangeable Lens Compact
Digital zoom is different in that the camera shoots then photo, then magnifies it after to create an artificial close-up. This is when you take your picture, manually magnifying it in the viewer, and save it. The downside here is that it can ruin the quality of the photo since it messes with the actual pixels to create that zoomed in look.
Zoom Lenses for the New Nikon Cameras
Point and shoot cameras have built in zoom lenses that cannot be removed, but Nikon digital SLR cameras have the ability to use interchangeablelenses. If you are getting into serious photography, you'll know that a digital SLR is the way to go. The opportunity to change zoom lenses can be perfect for different conditions and types of photos you want to take.
Zoom range is listed as a number followed by an "X". This means the minimum magnification level is multiplied by that number. For example, a 35mm camera with a 10x zoom lens would then be allowed a 350mm maximum zoom. Remember that it's all based on the measurement of the specific camera, so a 10x zoom lens will not create the same effect on every model.
Beware that long zoom lenses require a tripod, otherwise it'll cause the camera to shake more than usual. The shutter response time on zoom lenses may also be slower, so spontaneous pictures can be tough to take. Use zoom lenses in situations where you don't need to hurry to catch the perfect moment, but have time to set up the picture just right.

Cast your mind back if you will to a time when a photographer was required to coat large cumbersome plates, sensitize their own printing papers and prepare a range of toxic chemicals. Now contrast that process with a 'gizmo' laden mega, mega pixel 'offering' purchased for small money and you can see how far we have come in a relatively short period of time. Go one step back and remember the trail blazing artisans who constructed their own cameras using a variety of diameter pins in place on lenses and you can see an even more striking contrast which is difficult to grasp.
The amount of luck and uncertainty endured by the pioneering few and the inexplicable causes for failure would, I am sure, lead us all to forget the whole idea of making pictures. The rapid advancements in technology over a short timescale had pushed the boundaries of photographic practice to the point where anyone can record an event.

The D40 uses a Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor with 6.1 effective mega pixels.
The biggest negative about the D40 is that it lacks an internal focus drive motor. This means that it can only auto focus with AF-S and AF-I lenses and manual focus only with others. Although this means you can't use all the available lenses it is still compatible with some of the most popular lenses offered by Nikon and other manufacturers. Some features on the D40 include an ISO 3200 equivalent (HI 1), a customizable Auto ISO, short shutter lag and in camera retouching. In addition to the standard kit lens you may want to consider Nikons 18-200mm VR lens for longer zoom range, especially if you will be shooting your kids sporting events.

Although a good number of people are ditching compact digital cameras altogether for their cellphone cameras, there has still been an increase in the number of consumers making the switch to DSLR cameras -and I'm not even talking about professional photographers and hobbyists. I have several friends who have little photography skills upgrading and it's not difficult to understand why.
Even if you're a little unsure about what ISO and aperture mean, DSLR cameras are still simple to use and will give you wonderful results. The big advantage to these cameras is that they're fast. How many times has your compact camera not focused properly and by the time it does, there is still a second lapse in time between pushing the button and the camera actually taking the shot. And of course the moment has passed, the scene ruined. There is never a delay with DSLR cameras thanks to the shutter. This alone is reason enough for some camera lovers.
Interchangeable Lens Compact
Although a sunny day is the "ideal" for taking excellent photographs, we can't always rely on our surroundings. We might be at a nightclub checking out a local band or at an outdoor evening wedding and the lighting just won't cooperate as nicely as we hoped. As long as the flash is on, the pictures will come out decently. With a DSLR, you don't even need the flash on. The ISO, which I mentioned earlier, is a digital sensor that is sensitive to light. As you increase the ISO, you increase the sensitivity to the light so you will be able to take a photograph in dimly lit areas. The only downside is that an increase in ISO also means an increase in graininess or background noise. Even still, the photographs will be noticeably better and clearer.
The Benefits of DSLR Cameras
DSLR cameras offer complete control over the photographs. Yes, you can definitely switch to manual mode on compact digital cameras, but it simply won't compare. Not familiar with all the modes and settings? No worries, because you can use the automatic settings on the DSLR until you become comfortable with the controls. Many have intuitive manuals right on the camera itself that explains what each setting/feature is. Twenty years ago you would have had to read through a manual longer than The Lord of the Rings to understand all these concepts. Now you can view simple tutorials on the camera or do a bit of research online. Within just a few weeks you can learn the basics and be on your way to taking great pictures.
Then when you're ready, you can experiment with tripods, interchangeablelenses, external flashes, and all that other "good stuff." You don't need to be an expert to enjoy high quality, just a few hundred dollars and the willingness to learn.
